There is nothing more important to do than protect and preserve our
water supplies from radioactive contamination and depletion.
America's largest aquifer, the High Plains Aquifer, also known as the Oglalla
Aquifer, is threatened by contamination and depletion due to in situ
leach (ISL) uranium mining by Cameco Resources (formerly known as Crow
Buttes Resources), Crawford, Nebraska, which is the largest uranium
mine in the US. Canadian owned Cameco has been mining since 1990 and
uses up 4.7 billion gallons per year of the Aquifer which is now
depleting at a rate of 160% of its recharge rate.
We are calling on all allies to help in this effort. Cameco is the largest uranium
company in the World. Cameco has about $13 Billion in stock value on
the Toronto and NY Stock Exchanges and about 550 million pounds of
Uranium reserves; 10% of which is at Crow Buttes, Crawford, NE.
We support Petitioners Tom Cook, Owe Aku & Debra White Plume, Slim
Buttes Ag. Dev. Corp., and Western Nebraska Resources Council in their
efforts to get a public hearing on whether Cameco should be allowed to
expand by 50% more in its ISL uranium mining and water usage. Briefs
are due Friday, December 28, 2007 and oral argument is set for
Wednesday, January 16th and Thursday, January 17th, in Chadron, NE.
